HOW EMPLOYEES CAN FIND COMMON GROUND with LEADERSHIP Many times, I have had a different point of view from my leadership. And many times, we have had strong disagreements over workplace issues. But, building connections and partnerships within the workplace takes practice and some skill.

  1. You can use the power of the story to connect with leadership. Sharing stories about things you once experienced and how you felt at that time, the other person may recognize a situation in which they felt a similar way.

Then a strong connection is developed, and maybe even a certain degree of trust is formed. For example, you and the leadership member may not vote for the same political candidate, but your shared beliefs in free speech and the democratic process are common ground.

2.Another way of building this common ground is by the process is a series of actions or steps taken to achieve a particular end. Pay attention to the progress in a discussion.

3. Identify a common goal you are both seeking as the discussion continues.

4. Acknowledge the other person’s point of view. Don’t forget, everyone wants to be appreciated and listened to.

5. Agreeing with someone with whom you strongly disagree may feel counterintuitive. And finally, express a hefty dose of optimism about being able to make progress.

More than once, say out loud that you want the same things as the opposition. AND mean it! Keep connecting your energy differently. I’m Kerry Ruff.
